“Legislative Audit blasts University of Minnesota for ethics failures in Dan Markingson case”

20 mar 2015 — The Office of the Legislative Auditor has delivered a scathing condemnation of the University of Minnesota for its ethical failures in the study that led to the death of Dan Markingson. The report cited issues surrounding coercion of a vulnerable subject, multiple conflicts of interest, and a response by university leaders that was “defensive, insular and unwilling to accept criticism about the Markingson case either from within or outside the university.”

“We are especially troubled by the response of University leaders,” the report said. “They have made misleading statements about previous reviews.” The report continued: “Rather than acknowledge the concerns, University officials have essentially dismissed them and said there is nothing to talk about.”

“It leaves us wondering why the University of Minnesota has a Center for Bioethics when University officials will not meet with the center’s faculty to discuss the very real and important bioethical questions the Markingson case raised.”
